On May 12, 2026, I had the honor of serving as the keynote speaker for Bellarmine Preparatory's Senior Pot Blessing Celebration in Tacoma, Washington. The evening's theme was Keys to Success, and as I reflected on what key I wanted to leave with the graduating seniors, I chose something I call Support Discernment.
Support Discernment is the ability to recognize which people, opportunities, advice, and relationships are helping move you toward your goals and which may be unintentionally pulling you away from them. During my remarks, I shared parts of my own journey as a 16-year-old high school student experiencing homelessness while trying to navigate school, uncertainty, and a future that often felt unclear. Looking back, some of the most important decisions I made were not simply about accepting support. They were about learning how to evaluate that support.
Was it helping me grow?
Was it aligned with where I wanted to go?
Was it opening doors or creating new barriers?
Learning to answer those questions changed the trajectory of my life.
What I did not expect was how openly the students would respond. As the conversation continued, seniors began sharing their own journeys through Bellarmine. They spoke about challenges they had overcome, sacrifices their families had made, lessons they had learned, and the dreams they were preparing to pursue after graduation. There were tears throughout the room. There was laughter. There was gratitude. Most importantly, there was vulnerability. Students who had spent years together began seeing parts of each other's stories they had never heard before. It was one of those rare moments that reminds you how much strength can be found when people feel safe enough to be seen.
For me, that is what speaking is really about. It is not just about standing behind a podium. It is about creating space for people to reflect on their own experiences, recognize their own resilience, and leave with practical tools they can carry into the next chapter of their lives. Whether I am speaking to students, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, or community leaders, my goal is always the same: to connect through authentic storytelling while providing real-world strategies that people can immediately apply.
A special thank you to Tawanna Wilson, Counselor at Bellarmine Preparatory,
for inviting me to be part of such a meaningful tradition.
Thank you also to the Parents of African American Students Association (PAASA) for sponsoring this event and investing in the success of these remarkable young people.
It was a privilege to spend the evening with the Class of 2026, and I left inspired by their courage, honesty, and promise. If there is one key I hope they carry with them long after graduation, it is Support Discernment: the wisdom to recognize the people, opportunities, and support systems that will help unlock their future success.
