The Princess and The Office. From the Oval Office to My Office: Why Entrepreneur Moms Need Teams—Not Perfection!

Bedtime Stories Before the Scrubs (and Why Support Is the Real Superpower)

Tonight looked like this:

First—bedtime story.

Not in the nursery. Not in a perfectly quiet bedroom.

But in my office… with my 3-year-old son Michael aka MD3, in his pajamas… while I squeezed in one more sacred moment before walking out the door.

Then my husband tagged me out (so thankful for that man). He finished the bedtime routine, tucked our son in, and held it down at home, so I could put my CNS scrubs on and head to an evening fertility client visit, filling in for my nursing staff.

And that’s the part I want to say out loud for every CEO mom, entrepreneur mom, and business exec mom who is trying to “do it all” and quietly wondering if she’s failing:

Sometimes, as women business owners… we have to do parenting a little differently.

But different doesn’t mean less loving.

Different doesn’t mean your child is missing out.

Different just means you’re human… and you’re building something.

My #1 recommendation for mom entrepreneurs: get a support system FIRST

If you take nothing else from this post, take this:

My #1 recommendation for navigating business life as a mom is to get a great support system 1st.

Grandparent babysitting grandson

Because support isn’t a “nice-to-have.” Support is often the difference between:

  • Burnout vs. longevity

  • Growth vs. survival mode

  • Building a business vs. constantly putting out fires with your last ounce of energy

And in healthcare? Whew. Support matters even more.

Healthcare doesn’t always clock out neatly at 5 PM. Clients still need you. Your team still needs you. The work still needs doing. And when you’re the leader, sometimes you’re not just the CEO: you’re the backup nurse, the problem-solver, the one who steps in when the schedule gets tight.

So, if support isn’t “in-born” for you, then build it. Borrow it. Create it. Trade babysitting with a trusted friend/family member/mastermind group buddy, etc. Join a community of like-minded, similar-work life mom business owners/executives. Pay for help when you can. Let people show up for you without guilt.

Because no support can be a huge barrier to a mom entrepreneur’s success.

And I’m saying that with love… and with lived experience.

The book tonight: The Look (and why it hit different)

3-year-old Michael Daniels III aka MD3 reads The Look by Michelle Obama

In the video, you’ll see me reading The Look by Michelle Obama with my son, Michael, or what our family like to call him by his nickname, MD3.

He’s pointing at the cover, and I’m telling him, “That’s Michelle Obama." He's telling me she's the "Princess" and even points out her Prince Charming. And in that moment, it’s not just a bedtime story, it’s a seed.

Because Michelle is not just a public figure to me.

She’s a mom.

And she’s also someone who has openly shared that she went through IVF to have her girls. Michelle's IVF story on PBS

So, for my fertility clients, my egg-freezing clients, my moms-to-be in that tender waiting season… please hear me:

You are not alone in this.

Even some of the most visible women in the world have walked the road of fertility struggles, private tears, doctor visits, and “please let this be the cycle” prayers.

And here’s what struck me as I flipped through The Look with my son…

Michelle showed up—over and over—looking incredible, standing tall, carrying history on her shoulders… with a great team around her.

That part matters to me, because it reminds us of something we forget:

It’s not weakness to need a team.

It’s pink wisdom.

For the mom who feels guilty tonight

If your bedtime routine isn’t picture-perfect…

If you’re doing story time in the office sometimes…

If your partner is picking up slack while you handle business…

If your child has seen you work hard and love hard in the same day…

I want you to know:

You’re not doing it wrong. You’re doing it real!

And real is what our kids feel most.

They don’t remember whether the story happened in a crib or at a desk. They remember the warmth in your voice. They remember that you came back. They remember that they’re loved.

And if you’re a mom entrepreneur reading this, drop a comment:

What’s one “different” way you’ve made motherhood work while building your dream?

No shame. No perfect-mom contest. Just honesty.

Because we’re not just raising children. We’re raising futures, while building legacies.

Tagging the IMO Podcast page with gratitude—because tonight, Michelle Obama was The Princess in my son’s bedtime story. Thank you, Michelle!
